Diagnosis and Treatment of Eating Disorders Workshop

28feb9:00 am12:00 pmDiagnosis and Treatment of Eating Disorders Workshop

Event Details

Rachel Bichara, MA, PLPC, LPC is a licensed therapist in both Kansas and Missouri. Rachel has worked with individuals struggling with eating disorders at a treatment facility called EDCare Kansas City for the past year. In her work at EDCare, Rachel has led several different therapy groups and provided meal therapy for patients. In addition to assisting with the Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient programs at EDCare, Rachel sees private practice clients at an office in Brookside. Rachel is very passionate about educating clinicians and community members about recognizing and treating eating disorders.

OVERVIEW:  While most mental health-related graduate programs provide education on a wide variety of disorders and treatments, most do not prepare new clinicians to diagnose and treat something as complex as an eating disorder. This puts clinicians in a potentially dangerous situation if faced with a client struggling with an eating disorder; but not presenting with the trademark signs that come with the base knowledge of eating disorder symptoms. This scenario is all too common, and the following workshop aims to fill in some of those gaps and equip clinicians to detect eating disorders, and refer when appropriate.

OBJECTIVES: As a result of attending this workshop, the participant will be able to:
•    Increase understanding of the different ways eating disorder symptoms can manifest,
•    Gain knowledge about the potential short-term and long-term effects of eating disorders,
•    Demonstrate a better understanding of when to refer clients to a higher level of care.
