A Taste of Motivational Interviewing

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This continuing education workshop is designed for case managers, social workers, psychologists, therapists, nurses, counselors, and health care workers. Those that work in helping professions are welcome to attend.                                             

OVERVIEW: This workshop will introduce helping professionals to the spirit and techniques of Motivational Interviewing that can be extremely useful when working with people that are struggling to make a change.  This conversation style offers a different approach to guiding clients/patients through the process of change.

OBJECTIVES: After attending this workshop the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the “spirit” and 4 processes of Motivational Interviewing (MI).
  • Demonstrate and practice the interpersonal style for evoking intrinsic motivation.
  • Identify areas of practice that actually make change less likely to happen for clients.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: Mental Health America of the Heartland is a pre-approved provider for social workers through the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB) Provider Number 17-007. This continuing education provider is approved 3.0 hours for social workers and accepted for psychologists, professional counselors, masters prepared psychologists, marriage and family therapists and addiction counselors. For licensed professionals, please bring license # to the workshop to receive your CEU Certificate of Attendance. 3.0 CEU’s (Certificate of Attendance)

Scott Kerby, LPC is a Motivational Interviewing trainer, coach and coder, consulting independently for the Missouri Coalition for Behavioral Healthcare and the Midwest ATTC (Addiction Technology Transfer Center). He has been a featured speaker at Kansas University, Truman Medical Center, University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a variety of schools in the community.  Scott has 8 years of experience in dual diagnosis counseling, and over 12 years of experience working with at risk youth and families.  He has a passion for working with “hard to reach” clients who tend to be marginalized and cast aside.  Scott holds a MA in Counseling from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a BS in Human Services from Missouri Baptist University
