Will The Real OCD Please Stand Up: Accurate Diagnosis and Treatment

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Social workers, psychologists, therapists, counselors and other mental health professionals, nurses and health care workers are invited to attend as well as the community.

OVERVIEW: This workshop will assist those in helping professions to accurately diagnose and screen for this frequently misunderstood psychiatric condition. Proper diagnosis of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder will be reviewed with an emphasis on common misperceptions and misdiagnoses. The Presenter will provide a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy conceptualization of OCD, an overview of the maintenance factors, and the evidence-based treatment rationale. There will be an introduction to the therapeutic modality of Exposure and Response Prevention, the gold-standard treatment for OCD.

OBJECTIVES: After attending this workshop, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand OCD (differentiating obsessions from compulsions, the most misunderstood themes, and differential diagnosis from OCPD),
  • Acquire knowledge to properly screen and/or diagnose patients with OCD,
  • Demonstrate introductory knowledge of Exposure and Response Prevention rationale and technique.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: Mental Health America of the Heartland is a pre-approved provider for social workers through the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB) Provider Number 17-007. This continuing education provider is approved 3.0 hours for social workers and accepted for psychologists, professional counselors, masters prepared psychologists, marriage and family therapists and addiction counselors. For licensed professionals, please bring license # to the workshop to receive your CEU Certificate of Attendance. A Certificate of Attendance of 3.0 CEU’s will be awarded to each participant.

Shanda Curiel, PsyD is a licensed Clinical Psychologist who specializes in the treatment of pediatric and adult Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders, Tic Disorders, and Anxiety Disorders­­­­­.  She has received extensive training in evidence-based treatments, implementing these approaches in various levels of care (treating mild to extreme severities).  Dr. Curiel is also a Consultant for and Graduate Instructor on the diagnosis and treatment of OCD and Anxiety Disor­­­­­­­­­ders. She is passionate about raising awareness to medical/psychiatric professionals and members of the community on the etiology, symptoms, and maintenance of OCD.
