Free Your Breath, Free Your Mind: A Yogi’s Journey to Mental Wellness

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This workshop is designed for case managers,  social workers, psychologists, therapists, professional counselors, masters prepared psychologists, marriage and family therapists, addiction counselors, nurses and health care workers. Community is welcome to attend.

OVERVIEW: Each participant will leave with a basic yoga sequence that they will be able to practice at home, sitting at work in a chair or share with a client. Participants will learn a variety of Yoga asana’s (poses) and breathing techniques that have been proven scientifically to address depression, trauma, sleeplessness and anxiety.  Participants will be introduced to breath awareness which relaxes muscles and organs, calms the nervous system and centers the mind.

OBJECTIVES: After attending this program the participant will be able to:

  • Gain a basic understanding of yoga,
  • Learn breathing treatments to help deal with depression, trauma, sleeplessness and anxiety,
  • Understand the importance of yoga and breathing to relax and calm the mind in stressful situations.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: Mental Health America of the Heartland is a pre-approved provider for social workers through the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB) Provider Number 17-007. This continuing education provider is approved 1.5 hours for social workers and accepted for psychologists, professional counselors, masters prepared psychologists, marriage and family therapists and addiction counselors. For licensed professionals, please bring license # to the workshop to receive your CEU Certificate of Attendance. A Certificate of Attendance of 1.5 CEU’s will be awarded to each participant.

Please complete and return a registration form with payment by September 18, 2017.

Susan Estes is the Director, Child and Youth Mental Health Initiatives at Mental Health America of the Heartland. Susan shares her own mental wellness journey with students and youth organizations, while encouraging them and providing resources for young people to address their mental health. Susan, a certified yoga instructor, taps into her own experiences when speaking at conferences and provides numerous workshops on using yoga to relieve the symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress.
