WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This workshop is designed for the community.

OVERVIEW: Now that retirement is upon you, do you need a Will? Is the Will you signed when the kids were young still effective? Is it time for a trust? What happens if you become frail or suffer memory loss as you age? Attorney Samantha L. Shepherd will walk you through all of these questions and more so you can plan your retirement years.

OBJECTIVES: After attending this program the participant will be able to:

    • Learn when you need a Power of Attorney for Healthcare and a Power of Attorney for Finances.
    • Know more about when a Will or a Trust is best.
    • Learn how to protect your money from Probate.

Samantha L. Shepherd, JD, LLM, CELA is the founding attorney of Shepherd Elder Law Group, LLC and practices exclusively in the areas of Elder Law and Estate Planning in Kansas and Missouri. She received her undergraduate degree in 1990 from Tulane University in New Orleans, cum laude. She earned her law degree in 1994 from Boston College Law School and received an LL.M. in Estate Planning from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. Samantha was the first Certified Elder Law Attorney in the state of Kansas. Her elder law and estate planning practice areas encompass long term care planning, asset protection, Medicaid and VA planning, trust administration, guardianships and special needs planning. Samantha is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) and currently serves on their national board, which is an elected position. She served two terms as Chair of the Elder Law Committee of the Missouri Bar Association and was charged

with the responsibility for developing continuing education programs for Missouri elder law attorneys.  Samantha is past president of the Missouri Chapter of NAELA and is an active member of the Kansas Chapter of NAELA.  Samantha currently serves as Chair of the Probate & Estate Planning Committee for the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association.  She is the author of Shepherd Elder Law blog.
